CLASS INQUIRY PROJECT
How an inquiry project came to fruition.
This is an example of student-centred learning.
THE "HOOK"
With sand pails in tow, the whole class explored the Kindergarten courtyard in search of items that they were particularly interested in. There were buckets full of pine cones, pine needles, sticks, mulch, leaves, bark, leaves and an acorn.
CO-CREATED SENSORY TABLE
We brought the materials that we gathered outside, and placed them in our co-created sensory table. Next to the table are magnifying glasses so we can take a closer look.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The student who found the acorn was trying to determine what to do with the acorn. After consultation with her peers and staff she decided that she wanted to see if the achor would grow if it was planted.
WHERE DID THE ACORN ORIGINATE?
We have a maple tree directly outside of our classroom. The acorn did not come from there unless a squirrel moved it. We should look for a drey (a squirrels nest), they will be easier to spot as the leaves start to fall down.
RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY
We have 5 class iPads readily available, a few students began researching acorns. The students were learning about what kind of "dirt" the acorn needed (potted mix) since the plants will be grown indoors.
WHERE TO DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Our class library now showcases library books to support the inquiry. The students have been saving seeds from their snacks and lunch to plant. One of the students brought in dried beans from home. We have just started planting the seeds. Check back for progress. We are planning on walking around the school yard to see if we can identify any oak trees. Have you seen any oak trees near by?
